NBA All-Star Weekend Review

Yeah, I know there was the Manchester derby and the Madrid derby but the biggest sporting event this weekend had to be the NBA All-Star Weekend. Now, for people who do not know what it is, the NBA All-Star Weekend is a weekend festival held mainly every February during the middle of the regular basketball season. A lot of events, exhibitions and performances are lined up from Friday with the main event, the All-Star Game holding on Sunday.

The NBA All-Star Game showcases the best stars in the league who are drafted by the two players with the most votes. Each team consists of 12 players.  This year’s All-Star Game Matchup was Team LeBron vs Team Durant.

This year though, due to the COVID-19 (all my people hate the rona), the All-Star Weekend was just for one day (Sunday).

The games began with the skills contest which was won by Domantas Sabonis. The Indiana Pacers star defeated Julius Randle, Luca Doncic and Nikola Vucevic.

A lot of people had their eyes on the 3-point contest not to see who was going to win though, just to see if Steph ‘greatest shooter of all time’ Curry would make all his shots.  As expected, he got to the finals without breaking a sweat. He was made to sweat a bit though as Mike Conley of the Utah Jazz put up a strong challenge, Ultimately it wasn’t enough as Steph won (28-27) the 3-point contest for the second time.

For the Slam Dunk Contest which took place at halftime, Anfernee Simons of the Portland Trail Blazers narrowly edged Obi Toppins (New York Knicks) 3-2 based on a new rule termed ‘The Judges Choice’.

So to the main event, Team LeBron vs Team Durant.

With Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid absent due to contact tracing this was how both teams lined up:

Team LeBron

 Stephen Curry

Luka Doncic

LeBron James

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Nikola Jokic

Team Durant

Kyrie Irving

Bradley Beal

Kawhi Leonard

Jayson Tatum

Zion Williamson

The highlight of the first quarter had to be baby boy Zion Williamson of Team Durant missing about 3 dunks. He ain’t got that All-Star juice yet.

The second  quarter was a point guard show  from the start with guards Mike Conley and Chris Paul going against  each other for  the  2nd quarter tip-off. That was super hilarious.

It continued with Steph Curry and Chris Paul trading alley-oops. Towards the end of the 2nd quarter, Damian Lillard hit a half-court 3. Seconds later, his teammate on the night, Steph Curry replied with his. Team LeBron had pulled clear. (100 -80)

They maintained that lead through the 3rd quarter and the 4th quarter. To end the game, it was only right everything got wrapped up in Dame Time with the Portland Trail Blazers talisman sinking in a half-court 3 point shot as Team LeBron defeated Team Durant 170-150.

In the end, Giannis won the All-Star Game MVP scoring 35 points with an amazing 16-for-16 shooting.

Overall, it wasn’t the usual NBA All-Star weekend which made it seem a little bit underwhelming (again, my people and I hate the rona) but dunk contest aside, it was definitely an interesting one. At least we finally got the two best players in the league on the same team showing some bromance. (Curry please come to the Lakers😭😭).

Did you enjoy the NBA All-Star Weekend? Did you have a favourite moment? Let me know.
